Natural or Not?

by Upenzi

I was reading an article this morning about going natural (See Hairs The Thing).  It got me wondering I should put this box of perm sitting on my desk under my bathroom sink and try managing my own hair for a while.  Then I remembered I have an order of 2 really pretty half wigs scheduled to be delivered today.  🙂

But seriously, I think it’s something I might consider.  My mother has been natural over 10 years and now has beautiful dreadlocks down to her butt.  My 19 year old sister just went natural about 2 months ago and her hair is very curly.  Her hair style looks like Nola in “She’s Gotta Have It”.  Even a few of my cousins have gone natural.  It’s been so long since I’ve gone more then a month without a perm, I’m honestly scared to do it.  I know one thing for sure, I’ll have to go to a shop and do the big chop because I have a ton of split ends.

I went natural in 2008. I chopped all my hair off. It was refreshing to start all over. I think you should go natural. You’ll enjoy the process.

I’m really considering it and it would make a great start to 2013. 😛

I’m 2.5 years natural and still waiting to wake up with a head of hair like that. When I BC’d I didn’t know the journey I would be going on but I’m glad I went on it. I’ve learned a lot about myself while learning about my hair.

Good luck to you if you decide going natural. There’s tons of resources and support available to you.

I’m so curious to know what my hair will do. It think the scariest part is the BC (plus I have a big head & it’s flat in the back LOL). Thanks for the well wishes! I’m sitting here now watching YouTube videos about the journey. There is so much to learn! 🙂

Hey girl,

I hope your xmas was amazing!

I actually ended up cutting off all of my hair and did the big chop in 2010 (see my trainwreck of a vlog series documenting it if u do a quick search of sexandcupcakes on YT if u need inspiration, LOL) and I ended up LOVING IT. It was the best decision ever. What I did, however, is i grew my hair out for 7 months, then I big chopped and then I would pull it up in a puff with a scarf. The more videos you look at on youtube the less scarier it will seem! Good luck babe! Keep us updated!

Going natural was THE best decision that I made in 2011. I big chopped (I cut the front of my hair while my boyfriend clipped the back) and after the whole thing, I felt AH-MAZING. It’s been over a year and my hair is past it’s old length from when I was relaxed. The time truly flies by and before you know it, you’re back to having a full head of hair. The decision is all yours, but I say go for it!

BTW: I haven’t been on your blog in forever! It’s lovely and I’m so happy to see my blog link in your blogroll. I recently changed my blog URL to I’ll make sure to add you to my dailies as well. ➡

I permed my hair Tuesday and wish I would have just let it be. But I made a commitment that the day following my 32nd birthday (March 1st), I’m going to do the big chop and just ride it out. I’m ready for change!

*I updated it. 😉

I’m approaching my 2 year nappiversary soon, so I’m biased lol Going natural was an incredible experience for me, especially as I entered college. Isn’t it crazy though, that it’s considered wild, brave, and courageous just to wear our hair as it grows naturally from our heads! Document the journey, sit back, and watch your hair do it’s thing. YOU WILL LOVE IT!!!

It’s very ironic how managing what God gave you seems like the hardest thing ever to do. LOL!! It’s yours, so work with it. I always said if I ever had a daughter I would teach her about managing her own hair and never putting chemicals in it. Moms mess us up with kiddie perms, then we grow up and are afraid to not have a perm because it seems “unnatural” to not perm your hair. ❓

I have been natural since 2006. It was the best decision for me because I really wasn’t taking care of my hair like I should but I am doing great now. I enjoy doing my hair when I have to. I like to do styles that last a week or more. Cause I discovered that I don’t like doing my hair every day.
