One day I would like to understand what goes thru people’s mind when they decide to copy someone else’s hard work and claim it as their own. I have been in the website & design game for nearly 9 years. I have never (not even one time) taken something from another site and claimed it as my own work. I have never copied website codes in order to have my site look exactly like someone else’s. I have never duplicated any design, codes or layout from anybody then said I made it. NEVER! As designers, and I use that term so loosely, we all feed off each other. It’s called “inspiration”. Sometimes we see things that we like and want to learn how to do. So we try to duplicate it to learn the technique. Most designers will never duplicate anything then post it like they came up with the idea. It’s usually for reference or to earn how to do more. I for one, always give credit where credit is due. If there is something on a site that I like and the site owner is offering it as resource item, I will credit the source. Seems like the right thing to do right? It is. You didn’t make it, so credit the person who spent their time creating it.
This bring me to this…my site has been duplicated several times in the past. I had one e-pal copy my Biography page because she liked the setup. I was a little disappointed but we discussed it and in the end, she changed it up as much as she could. But because she and I are cool, I just gave up on the thought of asking her to delete it and left well enough alone. A short time later someone else in my blog circle had went to the site I got my toon from for my “Riding Hood” theme. The person who informed me was madder then I was. I couldn’t get upset considering I didn’t make the toon. Sure I was annoyed that she was using the same thing I was, but I didn’t make it and I listed the resource, so she was free to do what she wanted to do. Plus, her site looked nothing like mine. Case closed.
Not long after having my “Riding Hood” theme up a certain someone who shall remain nameless (take a wild guess) decided to put up a layout after she and I had a major e-beef. Her layout looked so much like mine that she might as well had just slapped my name at the top and said I did it. She tried so hard to copy my layout that it was obvious to anyone who saw it that she was biting my style. It was downright disrespectful. She even had the nerve to put my name in her credits and say she was “inspired” by my layout. Inspiration is one thing, trying your best to duplicate my whole site is another. Because we were already beefing at the time I don’t even think I bothered mentioning it. I just let it go because by then I was sick of reading about her and/or talking about her. And I just wanted to get online without drama.
So today…I’m chilling online and get an IM from this chick I’ve made e-pals with. She informs me that the previously mentioned biter has taken a bite out of my site once again. Actually this would be the 3rd time because she also stole my entire banned page. Which by the way I confronted her on and she admitted to stealing it but said she’d take it down. I dunno if she ever did cause I’m no longer banned from her site. I’m sure after she reads this I will be tho, so we shall see. So anyway, I go to the girls site to see for myself. Mind you I haven’t spoken to this girl since we killed our beef months ago, and I damn sure haven’t been to her site since then either. But low and behold…there is my entire Biography page & Domain page duplicated and replaced with her own info. Even the sidebar has been stolen and looks exactly like mine minus a few things. GRR! I decide to IM her hoping maybe if I step to her politely she’ll take it down.

(12:24:21 PM) ME: “HER NAME seems to have copied your biography page on your website http://HERSITE.com” (I pasted what I had been told via IM)
(12:24:31 PM) HER: omg i had that there
(12:24:42 PM) Monika: no the hell you did not

So much for trying to resolve it quietly. Still, I try to convince myself not to blog about this. So as I’m about to close her site, I notice her theme is the same theme I have. So I start looking at it harder because I want to see what she’s changed. Reason being the last time she used the theme, when she tried to copy my “Riding Hood“, the coding was all the original defaults and it was messy. I literally said out loud “Yoooo! WHAT THE FUCK?!?“. I immediately recognize my shit. She has copied my CSS code. I know this because I sat at my computer for 3 days coding the free theme the way I wanted it. I had saw the theme on a resource site for free themes but the fonts were very big. So to make it my own, I changed every single detail of the codes. Not only that but when I view the source of her codes, it’s mine. There are things in my code that are NOT included in the default code. There are things I inputted myself that she would not know how to do or what they are for. Some of the codes are for some plugins I have that aren’t even in use. How dare this girl creep through my website and steal my entire fucking code!!
Woo-fucking-saa! I cannot understand for the life of me how you call yourself a designer yet you steal everything. And to purposely keep duplicating my site is way beyond admiration or inspiration…its stalkerish as hell. To have absolutely no creativity of your own to the point where you have to steal someone else’s hard work is truly pathetic. I’m throughly disgusted by the whole thing.
What happened to the days when people actually designed their own sites? Coded their own shit? Got insprired but not to a point of duplicating? Since when did it become common practice to copy someone’s entire site then brag like its all your work? How old are you? Geezus!
I need a drink…this girl done irritated me.
And since I know you will be here to read this, I mean you love my site so surely you must be here everyday, feel free to comment and explain yourself since you decided to signoff when I came at you directly. Don’t be scared now. You remember when you told me you were scared to comment on my site…this time, I invite you to explain yourself. Like seriously…kick back, get your thoughts together and EXPLAIN.
(081308) Word is she’s talking about me on her site. I don’t know cause I’m not looking. Something about me “stealing a wallpaper to make this theme”. I didn’t steal anything. I know the artist on Deviant Art and checked with them prior to using it. Show me where I have claimed that as my own image and I’ll hand you a mirror and show you a liar. Its even credited on my domain page. Oh and I have a man. You will never see me discuss my personal love life on the internet. That’s our business…not anybody else’s. Everything is not for public consumption. And why are you worried about who I chat with online? Mad because nobody is talking to you? Hmm..jealous much!!
